The Art of Leaning In

by Teri O'Connor
The Peace Bridge across the River Foyle in Derry, Northern Ireland is a vivid reminder of the intentional effort that must accompany the work of peace.

This 1,000 ton steel structure spanning the river from bank to bank is not a straight path. Instead, like Derry’s search for peace, the walkway twists and curves its way across the expanse as if unsure of the best route to reach its intended goal. The winding pathway seems to quietly whisper that flexibility is the key to bringing the two sides together, while the symmetry of construction suggests that each must give equal measure to the process.

The pillars which support the bridge artfully reflect the act of leaning in. From a distance each one appears to lean across the path of peace, as if deliberately seeking to listen closely or to see the view from the perspective of those on the other side. Up close the pillars appear to slant away from one another with comparable weight while the cables hold tight, grounding each in their purpose of upholding peace.

This bridge which so beautifully represents Derry’s journey toward peace, stands as a testimony to the strength and resiliency of her people: leaning in, upholding peace, and working together for the promise of a better tomorrow.
